The lakeshore in every season is beautiful, but especially in winter! Whether you’re looking for fun outdoor activities or some shopping and dining, there’s plenty to do. To make planning your winter getaway easier, we have compiled a list of things to do in South Haven and Saugatuck/Douglas.
South Haven
For snowmobiling and cross country skiing, the Kal-Haven Trail is the perfect place. This 34 mile trail goes from South Haven to Kalamazoo and is picture perfect all year round. There must be at least 4” of snow to snowmobile. Snowmobilers must display a snowmobile trail permit and the snowmobile must be registered with the Michigan Secretary of State. Would you rather snowshoe instead? Check out the Sarett Nature Center. With 5 miles of groomed trails, enjoy the beauty of a Michigan winter while cross country skiing or snowshoeing. Need to rent equipment? As long as there is enough snow, equipment rentals are available during regular business hours. For a good sledding spot, check out the Coast Guard Hill.
Need to warm up after a fun filled time outside? Lakeside Bowl is a great place for indoor entertainment. After playing some games on one of their 16 lanes, fuel up at their restaurant featuring pizza, burgers, salads, soups, and more! This bowling alley has been family owned and operated since 1987 and has state of the art technology along with professional and attentive staff. Do a little shopping at Lakeshore Trends where you can find clothing, gifts, home décor, and more. Check out Crescent Moon of South Haven for trendy clothes.
For an indoor adult activity, check out Warner Vineyards. The vineyard is one of Michigan’s oldest and has a unique atmosphere and excellent views. Perfect for wine lovers, Warner Vineyards wines are made from fresh local ingredients. If beer is more of your thing, check out their brew haus. For a variety of food and beverages check out Clementine’s (closed on Sundays) in the heart of Downtown South Haven. Serving up scratch made favorites year round, The Lodge is a bar/restaurant that the locals go to that also is family friendly

Saugatuck/Douglas:
Throw on some snowshoes or cross country skis and enjoy the beautiful winter views at Saugatuck Dunes State Park. Inside this day use park, there are four trails that lead to Lake Michigan making it a great place to see some ice formations. Looking for more of a challenge? Climb the 302 steps to the summit Mount Baldhead and enjoy the picturesque views of Saugatuck/Douglas and Lake Michigan. If sledding is more your speed, there are plenty of sledding spots.
When it’s time to warm up, check out Isabel’s Market + Eatery for ready to eat items along with groceries. Looking to do a little shopping? Urban Found has clothing, jewelry, candles, and more. For stylish cold weather clothing, Landsharks has you covered. While you’re there, pick up some Saugatuck gear to remember your trip. After a fun filled day outside and shopping, fuel up at a restaurant. Whether you’re in the mood for fish, a burger, salad or sandwich, Wally’s Bar & Grill has options for you. Keep in mind, they are closed on Tuesdays during the winter. Check out Borrowed Time for chef-driven small plates using local ingredients. For a cold craft beer, check out The Mitten Brewing Company. In winter, they’re open Thursdays-Sundays.
